Once at the campus, Ybarra says he re-assembles the shotgun, loads it and walks toward Otto Miller Hall. When he attempts to take the students hostage by brandishing the weapon, Ybarra says a male student laughs at him, thinking the gun is fake.“I was really mad at him for doing that,” Ybarra later tells detectives. “That was the first guy I shot. When he turned his back.” At this time, the second victim is wounded from stray pellets.
