Zawahri returns to the library circulation desk, turns his back on the main entrance, and aims at a fellow student. Three officers enter the library, confront Zawahri, discharge their firearms and kill him. At first, one officer says he momentarily thought Zawahri was an officer based on his clothes, but then realized he was not an officer by the way he was carrying his rifle. Officers yell "police", and shoot Zawahri when he turns around and points his rifle at them. Zawahri falls to the ground and appears to have his hand on a detonator or another firearm. Officers continue to shoot Zawahri until he no longer remains a threat. Officers did not stop to treat victims along their way to the library, because their acive shooter training tells them to immediately apprehend the threat. One of the officers was off duty that day, but carried his personal handgun.
