Carpenter goes to Walmart with Thulin and another patient. She then fills out an application at Walmart to purchase a rifle or a shotgun, but is told she has to wait two weeks for paperwork to confirm she is a US citizen. Carpenter later admitted trying to buy the gun and told police she would pay half in cash and use her food stamp card to cover the rest, the affidavit says, according to NBC Connecticut. Carpenter also buys a knife with a 6.5 inch blade from a store called Wasteland. Police later found the knife stored in a box in Carpenter's room labeled "survivor".
