School staff members contact the sheriff's office and the sheriffs come to the school and question the boys. They uncover a fourth student involved in the plot, and discover detailed plans of who they boys were going to kill and how they were going to do it. The list of potential victims includes other students and staff. According to authorities, the students confessed and planned to "come on campus and shoot and kill as many people as possible". No weapons were found, but Mele (Tuolumne County Sheriff) said the students were in the process of trying to obtain some to carry out the attack.
